Why I want to be a Digital Nomad?
A couple of years ago when I was traveling in Eastern Europe I heard the words “Digital Nomad” and it instantly captured my attention. The same way 5 years ago I heard about working in cruise ships, now when I hear Digital Nomad my eyes shine and my full attention is in place. Same like a did when applying to cruise ships, I did with Digital Nomad lifestyle and search all over internet about this new kind of “job”.
After my resignation from my job in a cruise line, I am taking one and a half month vacations to explore Brazil during the World Cup and also stopping in Madrid, Rome and Paris as my last destinations in the Western World before moving to Asia, where the first stop will be Thailand. But how I am going to survive over there if I have no monthly secure income? At least in the ship I did not have expenses and could save most of my salary ($3,400 monthly when I resigned). What is the solution? Take the risk and become a Digital Nomad.
How are Digital Nomads defined? They are individuals that leverage wireless digital technologies to perform their work duties, and more generally conduct their lifestyle in a nomadic manner. Such workers typically work remotely, from home, coffee shops, public libraries and even from recreational vehicles to accomplish tasks and goals that used to traditionally take place in a single stationary workplace.
Basically this is working from wherever you want, as long as you have an Internet connection. It could be from a white sand beach in Thailand or a park in Berlin or admiring the rice fields in Bali, maybe from the dynamic New York, perhaps next to a lake in Myanmar, or why not? From a cruise ship.
But how do the Digital Nomads make money? There are different ways. Advertising in website, this is easy to understand, but there are other ways. Affiliate marketing is another possibility. You can promote a product and if the readers buy it, you get a small commission. Amazon has a big affiliate network, so I think I will explore that option. It is funny, but suddenly I will be without income. The only money I will receive is the rent from my house in Cancun, that will not be enough to cover my expenses in Bangkok but I made good savings after extending this contract in the ship. I am jumping into the adventure of becoming a Digital Nomad, because I have to try it. Is now or never.
I have been inspired for other travelers that have followed this road and are successfully living as Digital Nomads. Some of them are Alex from Alex in Wanderland, Bob from Stop Having a Boring Life, Samuel from Nomadic Samuel, Earl from Wandering Earl. And I hope one day David from Jump and Travel can do the same
So a different life is coming, where I need to be creative in order to make money from online business that can support my lifestyle. I want to concentrate in my blog, there are still so many things I want to share about traveling but also about ship life. Even if I stop working in cruise ships, I still have stories about the mafia going on in the vessel, the facilities for the crew, the drills we had to do, how to apply for a job in the ships and other topics.
Preparations in the ship are going on, my replacement is coming and we got plenty of time for the handover. Packing? Well, I normally do it on the last day and it is very easy. I can say that my whole life fits in one piece of luggage. I don’t like to accumulate things, I prefer to accumulate experiences. I will not buy an expensive watch (actually I don’t wear watch at all), but I will pay good money to fly to a new city to discover or to enjoy again those that I love, yes, Paris see you soon.
Ah, but not everything is work and project related, there is also some party, after 4 years, this summer I am going back to the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan, Thailand with my good friend Marco so stay tuned for the post of this infamous party in the beach. Life is changing, so instead of being in the office looking at numbers, now I will try to become a Digital Nomad, wish me luck!
Would you like to work remotely? Does you job allows you to do that sometimes?
